Studying in Canada from Morocco: The Essential Steps

Universities, study permits, admissions: what you need to know before pursuing your studies in Canada.

Canada is one of the most sought-after destinations for Moroccan students. Its internationally recognised education system, diversity of programmes, and opportunities to work during and after studies make it a compelling choice. However, a Canadian study project requires careful preparation, often started more than a year before the intended departure date.

Choosing Your Institution and Programme

Canada has two distinct higher education systems depending on the province. Outside Quebec, English-speaking universities offer Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programmes. In Quebec, the typical path goes through a CÉGEP (general and vocational college) before university, although international students with a high school diploma can generally enter university directly. The choice of province (Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Alberta…) affects the language of instruction, tuition fees, and post-study immigration options.

Admission Requirements

Each institution sets its own admission criteria, but some elements are common to most applications:

  • Official academic transcripts, translated and certified
  • Letter of motivation or statement of purpose
  • Academic or professional reference letters
  • Language proficiency proof (IELTS, TOEFL, or TEF depending on the language of instruction)
  • Proof of sufficient financial capacity to cover tuition and living costs

Institution response times vary from a few weeks to several months. It is advisable to submit your applications as soon as the portals open, typically in the fall for a September intake the following year.

The Study Permit

Once you have the acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), you can apply for a study permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The application is submitted online through the official Canadian government portal and generally includes biometric data collection, a medical examination, and the submission of financial documents. Plan ahead: processing can take several weeks to months depending on the period.

Preparing for Arrival

Alongside administrative procedures, think ahead about your settlement: student housing (university residences, shared apartments), opening a Canadian bank account, provincial health coverage, and connecting with Moroccan student associations in your area. Most Canadian university cities have active Moroccan communities that ease integration.
